Artificial intelligence: the fourth pillar of modern life

Imagine a day without running water. Uncomfortable by noon, serious by nightfall. Now take away electricity too, and then the internet. Somewhere in that exercise you stop imagining an inconvenience and start imagining a different civilization. That is what infrastructure means: the things whose absence changes everything. I believe artificial intelligence is joining that list, and the joining will be fast.

Three pillars, then a fourth

Modern plumbing made cities livable. Electrification made them run around the clock. The internet made distance nearly irrelevant to work and knowledge. None of these began as a necessity; each began as a curiosity that a reasonable person could ignore. The same pattern is repeating with AI, and the window in which ignoring it stays reasonable is closing.

Less visible, just as structural

AI feels different from pipes and wires because you cannot point at it. But its work is already load-bearing: it routes what we read, screens what we buy, drafts what we write, and sits inside decisions most people never see happening. Infrastructure does not need to be visible to be structural. Ask anyone who has ever wondered what actually happens when they turn a tap.

What a pillar asks of its builders

A pillar carries weight whether or not it was built well. That is the part I care about. Plumbing brought public health standards. Electricity brought codes and inspections. The internet is still catching up on rules it needed thirty years ago. If AI is the fourth pillar, the discipline for using it well has to be built alongside it, not bolted on after the failures.

Where this leaves us

Nobody inspected the first water pipes. The standards came later, written by people who had watched things fail. With AI we have a chance to do it in the other order, and that chance will not stay open long. That is the work in front of us. It will not be finished in my lifetime, and it is still worth starting properly.
